Timer pieces differ from regular ones in that they have a scale on top of them. The scale decreases by one division with every move, though you can get rid of timer pieces by making matches with them or by using power-ups (lightning bolts remove all the timer pieces of the relevant color).
IMPORTANT NOTE: you lose when the timer on any timer piece runs out.
