You can invest either gold or gems. Gems will convert to gold upon investment. Buildings will be instantly upgraded once they have reached their respective investment thresholds. In order to invest in a building, simply select one, adjust the sliding bar which denotes the amount you want to invest and tap or click ‘invest’.

Investing in your city allows you to unlock new content such as heroes, workers, and quests. In addition, it will increase the rate at which your regenerating resources replenish on an hourly basis and help your city move up in the global city rankings. In addition to these unlocks, building investment will grant an "instant bonus" to the investor and a "collective bonus" to the city (capped at 24 hours). Use these to create the best strategies to upgrade your shop, heroes, and more!
Keep in mind that when you leave your city on the first day you join, the city will take 10% of your investment. This added feature is to prevent players from city hopping. Don’t worry, the percentage will go down by 1% each day you stay in the city and after 10 days, you can leave without having any of your investment be taken away!
