Attacking other players’ Garrisons and lands gives you the opportunity to steal some of their Gold and Food, as well as earning some all-important Victory Points.
You can see how many resources you can steal by tapping on their Garrison and looking under "Available to Steal". The amount you can steal depends on the amount the enemy has in their stores, whether they have built a Gold Reserve or Grain Reserve, as well as your Brave Bonus.
